Hot Off the Press!

The Sherlock Holmies' Book of Idioms

My third grade group better known as the Sherlock Holmies, has been reading Clue Jr: The Case of the Secret Message. The students found figurative language throughout the book, which they learned to identify as idioms. We then checked out the book Raining Cats & Dogs by Will Moses for further exploration, and they published their own collection.

Evolution of the Bat Cave

The TA's keep cozy in their space not uncommonly referred to as more of a closet than a room. People can't seem to refrain from commenting on such the spacious sanctuary =). To excite her group of first grade boys for learning in the aforementioned setting, one TA began inviting them into the "bat cave."

This of course called for a new sign and a touch of decor; I could not resist.

perfectly complements the staff's superhero theme to boot

Words All Around Us

Being A WriterTM Lesson

After we checked out the book City Signs, a collection of thirty colorful photographs, I worked with Mrs. Bland's kindergarten students to identify words around the classroom such as "Smart Board."

The young writers enjoyed working in pairs to make signs for other everyday objects. Pictured above are labels for "mirror" and "window" in addition to "math" and "trash can." You also see my friend working hard to write "flag" with inventive spelling. Others labeled games, the clock, and the door to name some more. They are on their way to becoming real writers!

First Grade Fun

Mrs. Marchant's first graders love to chat about books. Here we are recalling a number of animals mentioned in  Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino.
